Things are bad, and they’ve only been getting worse for a while now: an expanding capitalist regime; a regressive transphobic culture; and a community that feels as though its buckling under the weight of it all. At some point, emotronica artist saoirse dream forgot how it felt for things to get better. She became accustomed to the slow decline, the societal backsliding, and tipped headfirst into the apocalyptic patterns of thought that plague her generation. 

Taking an archivist’s approach to the end of the world, saoirse dream’s upcoming LP grimdark leans into a strikingly grittier sonic palette. The effervescent electronics of her earlier oeuvre are swallowed up by a leviathan of despondency and distortion. Through visionary experimental production and unflinching lyricism, grimdark attempts to explore the question: what does it mean to make speculative art in an era where so many of us cannot imagine things improving?
